Banda de San Francisco, Califórnia, tiveram suas músicas baixadas mais de 20.000 vezes no MP3.com. Eles fazem uma mistura muito foda de indie-rock com pitadas de pós-punk e powerpop. A banda é formada por Mark Bornstein na guitarra e no vocal, Mark Nichoson no baixo e Lance Mathyssen: “sexo, bateria e rock ‘n roll”.

Sub-solo Rock: Por que o nome “The Downfalls”?
The Downfalls: Porque foi o único nome que nenhum de nós odiou (risos). O nome representa o triunfante sentimento de admitir seus próprios erros, se recuperar, servir outro drink e tentar de novo... ou deixar passar.

SSR: Quando e como vocês se conheceram?
TDF: Nós nos conhecemos da mesma maneira que muitas bandas, pela internet. Tem um cara chamado Craig. Ele tem uma lista.É muito popular na América.Talvez no Brasil também¿ É um espaço maravilhoso:você pode vender suas coisas velhas, encontrar um emprego ou simplesmente conhecer pessoas solitárias.Todos os dias tem toneladas de músicos querendo formar novas bandas.Se a pessoa certa achar o anúncio certo no mesmo dia...pode quem sabe, mudar a história do rock para sempre.Por outro lado, você pode conseguir alguns enfeites usados legais.

SSR: Qual banda é a influência direta de vocês?
TDF: Nós somos três com influências muito diferentes. Desde do old school street punk tipo The Stooges,Buzzcocks,Fear and X,ao glamour de David Bowie e T-Rex e aos novos indie/alternativos tipo The Pixies,Radiohead,Wolfmother e etc...você nomeia e nós tentamos tomar isso deles.Se tiver energia,paixão,melodia e pegada, nós gostamos.Mesmo assim de algum de jeito, nós fazemos nosso som de um jeito diferente dessas bandas.É uma praga e uma benção.

SSR: Do que se trata a música “California Dream” ?
TDF: California Dream: Eu comecei a escrever a letra durante o período em que eu comecei a sair com uma garota cuja família é italiana. Eu estava aprendendo a falar italiano e a primeira coisa que eu aprendi foi: Mia ragazza e’fiorentina(que significa:minha garota é de Florença).Eu simplesmente amei o jeito que soava.Então comecei a andar pela rua cantando isso para mim mesmo e eventualmente fui adicionando novos frases.Mas claro,metade do que eu estava aprendendo de italiano era sujo e então a música começou a ficar meio desagradável.A música inteira foi escrita assim na minha cabeça.Eu não toquei na guitarra antes dela ficar pronta.Tirei as partes em italiano exceto pelo primeiro verso.Aí a música se tornou sobre duas pessoas que estão muito apaixonadas.Eles brigam e gritam entre si, gritam para o mundo.O amor deles é como fogo, mas o aborrecimento do dia-a-dia dos dois acaba por apagar esse fogo.Eles estão na linda Califórnia para onde todos sonham ir um dia mas tudo o que eles querem fazer é fugir.E esse sentimento continua sendo verdade.

Sub-solo Rock: Why the name "The Downfalls"?
The Downfalls: Actually, this was the only name that we all didn't hate (band laughs). The name represents the triumphant feeling of finally embracing your own failures, picking yourself up, pouring another drink and trying again....or just passing out.

SSR: When and how you met?
TDF: We met the same way a lot of bands meet these days, through the internet. There is a guy named Craig. He has a list. It’s a very popular in America. Maybe in Brazil too? In this amazing place; you can sell your used couch, find a new job or just meet other lonely people. Every day there are tons of musicians looking to start new bands. If the right people happen to look at the right ad on the same day…who knows, maybe rock history changes forever. Otherwise, you can get some nice used tires.

SSR: What band it’s your direct influence?
TDF: We are three really different individuals with very different musical influences. From old school street punk like The Stooges, Buzzcocks, Fear and X, to the glammy swagger of David Bowie and T-Rex to newer indie/alterna faves like The Pixies, Radiohead, Wolfmother, etc...You name it and we try to steal it from them. If it has energy, passion, melody and hooks, we like it. Yet somehow, we manage to sound like none of these bands. It's a curse and a blessing.

SSR: What is the song California Dream about?
TDF: California Dream: I started writing the song around the same time that I started dating a girl whose family is from Italy. I was learning Italian and the first thing I learned to say was: "Mia ragazza e' fiorentina" (means: my girlfriend is from Florence). I just loved the way it sounded. I would walk down the street singing it to myself and eventually I started adding new phrases. Of course half of what I was learning was dirty Italian so the song got a little nasty. The whole song was written in my head that way. I never touched a guitar until it was just about done. Eventually, I took out most of the Italian parts except for the first verse. The song eventually became about two people that are very passionate. They fight and scream at each other, they scream at the world. Their love is a fire, but the boredom of their daily lives threatens to put out that fire. They are in beautiful California where most people dream of going but all they want to do is escape. It still feels real.
